Prospect for Breeding Sea Urchin in DPRK

Pyongyang, August 19 (KCNA) -- Korean people have widely used sea urchin, which has high food value and contains many medicinal ingredients, to their diet.

The salted sea urchin eggs with crude protein, crude fat, carbohydrate, phosphorus, vitamins, etc. have unique taste and aroma and are nutritious and digestive.

People say that they feel warm and relaxed in 30 minutes after eating sea urchin eggs.

Sea urchin eggs are also used as medicines to prevent or treat bed-wetting.

In this regard, Sim Yong Ju, department director of the Ministry of Fisheries, said as follows:

The DPRK seas have favorable conditions and environment for breeding sea urchin as the sea water quality is good and temperature is suitable as well as many gravels and rocks.

The fact that resources of sea urchins are increasing in waters off Chongjin City and Myongchon and Kosong Counties waters in the East Sea of Korea proves enough possibility of developing sea urchin farming.

The fishing sector is actively conducting the work to develop the sea urchin breeding, including solving scientific and technological problems related to the artificial breeding of sea urchins and innovating the breeding method. The Chongam offshore salmon feed supply station has produced sea urchin 1.5 times more this year than last year.

In the country fish farming and sea culture are being put forward as the main direction of the development of the fishing industry and conducted on a large scale. -0-
