Folk Customs of DPRK Seen in October

Pyongyang, October 1 (KCNA) -- In October there are Hanro and Sanggang, ones of the 24 seasonal divisions of the year in the lunar calendar, in the DPRK.

Hanro means cold dew falls and Sanggang frost falls.

From these seasons the weather is getting cold, the temperature difference between day and night severe, and the cold begins to fall.

Autumn harvesting and threshing are in full swing in those seasons.

In this period, the Korean ancestors worked hard in haste to harvest the crops they cultivated all through the spring and summer.

Before and after Hanro, they harvested crops including rice, soybeans and sorghum in paddy and dry fields, while sowing winter wheat and barley seeds. They bound the leaves of cabbage in the period of Sanggang.

The Korean people have eaten a variety of foods in conformity with the seasonal characteristics of October.

Typical are soybean food and loach soup.

They in seasonal dress played various folk games.

Like this, the Korean people have created and carried forward diligent and diverse customs of life suited to the characteristics of October.
