Mt Chilbo, Celebrated Mountain of DPRK

Pyongyang, November 2 (KCNA) -- In the southern part of the eastern coast of North Hamgyong Province, there is Mt Chilbo, one of the famous mountains of our country.

Its conspicuous natural scenery which can not be found in other famous mountains is characterized by peculiarly attractive mountains and valleys and graceful and fascinating forests and seaside. The mountain is divided into Inner Chilbo, Outer Chilbo and Sea Chilbo in accordance with their features.

Inner Chilbo is renowned for its enchanting scenery presented by autumn maples which colour the mountain red. Outer Chilbo is noted for beautiful waterfalls and ponds and legendaries and fairy-tales about it. And Sea Chilbo boasts pine trees growing on islet rocks, gulls and white beach. The mountain has been a popular tourist destination from a long time ago.

Mt Chilbo also has many historical remains and relics of the primitive, ancient and medieval times. And it is the home of the famous Chilbosan songi mushroom with peculiar fragrance and taste compared with the songi mushrooms in other areas.

Chairman Kim Jong Il visited Mt Chilbo on November 2, 1996 and personally made a long tour from Inner Chilbo to Outer Chilbo and Sea Chilbo, confirming the orientation of their development and giving precious instructions which would serve as guidelines for sprucing up Mt Chilbo as a cultural resort for the people.

Afterwards, many scenic spots were newly discovered and nice holiday camps and pavilions were built.

The 26th Session of the UNESCO International Coordinating Council of the Man and Biosphere Program registered the area of Mt Chilbo as a part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2014. -0-
