Principle of Creation of Hunminjongum - Intangible Cultural Heritage of DPRK

Pyongyang, October 23 (KCNA) -- Hunminjongum (Korean Alphabet) was created by the then excellent scholars in January 1444 (December 1443 of the lunar calendar).

At that time, it was composed of 17 consonants and 11 vowels.

Hunminjongum has various advantages.

The basic letters were made in a systematic way by imitating the shape of the sound-producing organs such as tongue, lips and throat and by adding strokes or combining two or three letters to suit the characteristics of the phonemes.

Hunminjongum is easy to learn and convenient to write.

The creation of Hunminjongum established the norms of Korean language and provided the possibility of ensuring the unity of linguistic life by it.

Hunminjongum, which reflects the creative wisdom and talents of the Korean people, also occupies a prominent position in the development of world characters.

The principle of creation of Hunminjongum was registered as a national intangible cultural heritage in October 2017. -0-
