Folk Customs of DPRK Seen in July
Pyongyang, July 1 (KCNA) -- In July there are Soso and Taeso, ones of the 24 seasonal divisions of the year in the lunar calendar, in the DPRK.
Soso falls early in the sixth lunar month and on July 6-8 of the solar calendar when the summer heat begins. Taeso falls late in the sixth lunar month and on July 22-23 of the solar calendar when the summer heat is at its height.
Soso and Taeso fall on July 7 and July 23 this year.
By the time of Soso and Teaso, all kinds of cereals and fruits grow well. Therefore, it is necessary to properly weed for crops in the season to yield good harvest in farming.
In July, there are the first and second periods of the midsummer heat in the country called Chobok and Jungbok.
Chobok and Jungbok fall on July 15 and July 25 respectively.
From olden times the Korean people have made various kinds of food in the hottest period of summer.
The dishes in the period include tangogi soup, chicken soup boiled with ginseng and adzuki-bean gruel.
In particular, tangogi soup stimulates the appetite and supplements nutrition to weakened body in hot summer.
