Grass Handicraft

Pyongyang, July 10 (KCNA) -- The grass handicraft is a form of Koreans' folk handicraft that has been created and handed down since ancient times.

This handicraft has been popular mainly among the people for its abundant materials, easy making method and usefulness.

In the period of Koryo Dynasty, Korean ancestors manufactured various kinds of grass crafts including straw mat, basket and wicker basket with such materials as sedge, bush clover, reed, willow branch, rice straw, hemp and arrowroot and widely used them in life. In this period, the making technique of grass crafts became skilled and elaborated, and thus grass crafts were well known to foreigners.

In the course of creative activities to meet the growing demand for grass crafts, the grass handicraft was further developed.

Today the grass handicraft favored by the people is becoming more diverse.

The grass handicraft was registered as a national intangible cultural heritage in November 2015. -0-
