The U.S. imperialists once launched the "Thanksgiving Day offensive" aimed to fulfill its ambition to finish the Korean War before the Thanksgiving Day and occupy the whole of Korea. They were bringing huge aggression troops into the north in an attempt to occupy the Unsan area by hurling main units into it and then break through the defence line of the Korean People's Army in cooperation with other units.
The President set forth the strategic policy for the third stage of the war to bring about a radical turn in the war situation and took a measure to open up a prelude for a re-advance in the Unsan area. He personally went to the forefront command post to learn about the topography of the Unsan area and ordered to encircle and annihilate the enemies through ambush and surprise attack.
By the order of the President, the KPA started general counterattack in the Unsan area on October 25, 1950.
The KPA soldiers displayed matchless bravery and mass heroism to mercilessly wipe out the enemies.
In the battle in the Unsan area, the Second Corps of the ROK puppet army consisting of two divisions and 6 regiments was totally destroyed except two regiments. The eighth cavalry regiment of the U.S. first cavalry division, which was dispatched to fill in for the collapsed right flank of the U.S. Eighth Army, was encircled and annihilated by the People's Army as soon as it appeared in the battlefield. The First Corps of the U.S. imperialist aggression army also suffered a heavy blow.
The enemies recorded the defeat in the area of Unsan as a "tragedy of Unsan".
Upset by the "tragedy of Unsan", Walker, commander of the U.S. Eighth Army, ordered all units to retreat.
The powerful counterattack of the KPA frustrated the enemy’s attack and foiled the US imperialists’ attempt to conclude the Korean War before the Thanksgiving Day.
