Mud-therapy in Lake Sijung
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- Lake Sijung, a lagoon in Thongchon County, Kangwon Province of the DPRK, is 2.94 square kilometers in area, and the mud layer of its bed is 4 to 5 metres thick.
Since it was prospected and tested for the first time in 1955-1956, mud of Lake Sijung has been used as one of the natural therapy resources. The black grey mud has no smell.
Mud in Lake Sijung is effective in treating arthritis of various causes, liver disease, chronic cholecystitis, chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, chronic colitis, trauma and surgical sequelae, nervous system diseases and gynecologic diseases.
The treatment methods include the one of putting a certain amount of mud and water in a tub and immersing the whole body or a certain part in it. This can be accompanied by electrotherapy, ultrasound therapy and phototherapy. Application temperature is usually 42~50℃ but it is sometimes applied at its original temperature.
Treatment duration is about 20 to 25 minutes. A total of 12 to 15 rounds of treatment are necessary, done once a day or once every two days.
Lake Sijung mud therapy was registered as a part of national intangible cultural heritage in October 2017. -0-
