Janggun Peak of Mt Paektu, Natural Monument of DPRK

Pyongyang, September 20 (KCNA) -- Janggun Peak is the highest peak of Mt Paektu.

Janggun Peak is 2 750 meters above sea level. It represents the height of Mt Paektu. It is the highest of the mountains of the DPRK and is one of the highest peaks in Northeast Asia.

It was called Paektu Peak in the past, but now is called Janggun Peak, reflecting the unanimous desire of the Korean people to convey the revolutionary exploits of President Kim Il Sung shining along with Mt Paektu to posterity.

The earth on Janggun Peak melts to a depth of about 70 centimetres only in three months of a year, and underneath it is permafrost.

During the short period of three-month thawing season, hundreds of kinds of flowers bloom at the foot of Mt Paektu to exhibit a unique scenery of the alpine region.

Janggun Peak of Mt Paektu was registered as a natural monument as it is of high value in studying the characteristics of the alpine region. -0-
