Biodiversity Protection Brisk in DPRK

Pyongyang, May 22 (KCNA) -- May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity.

As a signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the DPRK is striving to protect and make sustainable use of biodiversity.

It has planned medium- and long-term projects for biodiversity protection and conducted activities based on them.

Through the national medium- and long-term green plans, it is working out and implementing the work for rationally combining biodiversity protection with sustainable economic development.

As scientific research into comprehensive harmful insect extermination technology has been intensified and national measures were taken, the work for preserving ecological environment and ensuring agricultural development and clean urban environment are being stepped up.

Meanwhile, it has pushed ahead with the work to regularly identify and conserve the species of animals and plants and their inhabitation conditions.

On the basis of confirming the priority regions of biodiversity, it has set up sanctuaries in the regions with rich biodiversity and selected rational ecological channels connecting major sanctuaries, thus actively conserving the species of animals and plants in the country.

It scientifically evaluates and analyzes the effects of gigantic nature-remaking project, including forest restoration and tideland reclamation, on biodiversity and takes sci-tech measures for its protection.

The seasonal and annual number of water-birds is being comprehensively estimated in wetlands and major migratory bird reserves on the east and west coasts of the DPRK.

Relevant scientific research units are pushing ahead with the work to update the lists of species and endangered species, thus laying a scientific foundation for protecting the biological resources of the country. -0-
