Koryo Paper, Precious Cultural Heritage of Korean Nation

Pyongyang, January 16 (KCNA) -- Among the valuable cultural heritages created by the resourceful and intelligent Korean people is Koryo paper.

Koryo paper gained popularity in neighboring countries as the best one in the world.

Its kinds included Paekmunji (quality white paper), Kyonji (silkpaper), Achongji, leather paper, gold paper and tissue paper.

The general features of Koryo paper were white, tough, smooth, soft and worm-free.

Koryo paper was widely known abroad for its high quality.

In particular, Paekmunji, Kyonji and Achongji were exported to neighboring countries in the period of Koryo (918-1392) and thereafter. They were the necessaries of the nobles of other countries.

Koryo paper was not only famous in the East but also in European countries in modern ages.

The book "Korean Bibliography", published in Paris of France in 1894, estimated that Korean paper has soft and tough features, regardless of papers of any age, and that the books dating back to the period of Koryo found in European libraries, in particular, were neither yellowed nor worm-eaten.

It clearly shows the high quality and excellence of Koryo paper and the development of papermaking technology in the period of Koryo. -0-
