West Sea Barrage

Pyongyang, June 24 (KCNA) -- The West Sea Barrage is located about 20 kilometers west from Nampho Municipality in the DPRK.

The West Sea Barrage, inaugurated on June 24, 1986, gave birth to a large artificial lake with a capacity of storing billions of cubic meters of water. The water is in use for irrigation, industrial establishments and the people's life in the lower basin of the Taedong River.

The barrage has railway and motorway on it.

2 000-, 20 000- and 50 000-tonnage ships can pass through three lock gates of the barrage with a total annual freight traffic capacity of tens of millions of tons.

The barrage is making a great contribution to the development of the country's economy and the improvement of the people's standard of living.

The foreign visitors to the barrage said that it is possible to construct such barrage only when the country has the people who are self-reliant in firm unity and strong economic potential.

The West Sea Barrage has developed the country's foreign trade, water transport, motor transport and electric power industry and contributed to protecting the capital city of Pyongyang from flood damage by regulating the water level in the basin of the Taedong River for the past four decades.

The West Sea Barrage was completed in a short period of five years thanks to the energetic guidance of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il, who personally initiated its construction and devoted their all to its completion. -0-
