Pyongyang Onban

Pyongyang, January 18 (KCNA) -- Among the peculiar dishes traditionally handed down in Korea is Pyongyang Onban (cooked rice served in chicken soup).

Pyongyang Onban is one of the famous four dishes in Pyongyang served with boiled rice and mung-bean pancakes, chicken meat and fried mushroom as garnish and by pouring hot chicken broth into it.

There are similar dishes in different regions but pouring chicken broth on hot boiled rice is a feature peculiar to Pyongyang Onban.

Another feature of this dish is that the chicken broth is seasoned with salt instead of soy sauce.

In winter, Pyongyang people frequently took Pyongyang onban, which is unique in taste, together with bean paste soup and meat with cooked vegetables, for their diet, and especially enjoyed it as a holiday dish.

The restaurant, reputed to be good at Pyongyang Onban, is the Onban House in Ryomyong Street.

The visitors to the restaurant, who are taking Onban garnished with seasoning and chicken, pork, mushrooms and mung-bean pancakes, say that the hot Pyongyang Onban makes them feel warm and strong and is just good as a winter food.

Chairman Kim Jong Il said that people would be pleased if they are served with Onban and that Onban house should be built in Pyongyang and run well. And he took a necessary measure. He even taught how to cook Onban, saying that it would be good to put pork together with chicken in order to make the dish smell nice.

The recipe for Pyongyang Onban, a special dish of Pyongyang, drew attention of visitors to the exhibition of intangible cultural heritages-2025. It was registered as the Pyongyang regional intangible cultural heritage in 2016. -0-
