Drive for Coping with Disastrous Abnormal Weather Launched in DPRK

Pyongyang, July 27 (KCNA) -- Manpower and means are concentrated on the efforts to preventing damage by heavy rain and flood in different parts of the DPRK.

The agricultural sector focuses on reinforcing the dikes of small and medium rivers, canals and irrigation structures while increasing the drainage capacity in the crop fields vulnerable to flooding.

The electric power industry directs efforts to preventing the heavy rain and lightning damage to generators, transmitting and transforming facilities and transmission lines, while taking proactive measures to ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity needed for various sectors of the national economy.

Hastening the maintenance of reservoirs and pumps of mines and collieries, building of retaining walls for coal depots, repair of drainage channels and reinforcement of the dams of settling ponds, the coal and mining industries are taking measures to prevent the flooding at pits, coal depots and ore-dressing plants and the loss of coal and concentrates.

The field of land and environment protection has taken measures to prevent damage at flood-prone areas. The city management field pays attention to preventing flooding of reservoirs, water tanks and pumping stations and ensuring the full-capacity operation of drainage facilities.

The railway transport sector finished the repair of defective railway structures and the construction sector took measures to ensure labour safety and prevent equipment, materials and temporary buildings from being damaged or lost.

The fields of land and sea transport and maritime control are pressing for establishing a dual-power-supply system at the barrage offices, while regularly checking the safety of ships and making sure that crewmen get familiar with the action procedures to evacuate immediately in case of a high-wave warning. -0-
