Pyongyang, April 14 (KCNA) -- The area of Mt Paektu in the DPRK was registered as a global geopark on April 10 at the 221st meeting of the Executive Board of UNESCO being held in Paris.
The park consists of such peculiar geologic relics as Mt Paektu and Lake Chon on it, Jong Il Peak, Lake Samji and the Rimyongsu Falls naturally formed by the volcanic geological effects in the long process of the earth history, and of a grand canyon famous for Chongun Rock (gorge) and pumice layer, a product of the millennium eruption. Its peculiar geological features present a spectacular sight.
The registration of the area of Mt Paektu as a global geopark came to further highlight the geological significance of Mt Paektu, the ancestral mountain, and its tourist value. -0-
