Feats Performed by Defenders of Height 1211 during Fatherland Liberation War

Pyongyang, July 27 (KCNA) -- In the eastern mountains of the DPRK there is Height 1211, which was called "heartbreak ridge" or "trap valley" by U.S. imperialist aggressors during the Fatherland Liberation War.

In the battle on Height 1211, which was fought during the fourth-stage period of Fatherland Liberation War, the soldiers of the Korean People's Army killed and captured more than 29 000 enemy soldiers, shot down over 40 enemy planes and captured and destroyed more than 60 enemy tanks and many other weapons and combat equipment.

In those days the army and people of the DPRK made a great contribution to beating back the repeated "offensives" of the U.S. imperialists and achieving victory in the Fatherland Liberation War under the wise guidance of President Kim Il Sung, an invincible and iron-willed commander.

In the said period, the U.S. imperialists mobilized all the elite divisions, which were said to have gained "victorious experience" in many wars of aggression, to recover the heavy defeat they had sustained for a year since the outbreak of the war. Not content with this, they even brought in troops of their satellite countries.

In the second half of the year 1951, the enemy set Height 1211 as the major thrust of the "summer and autumn offensives" so as to occupy the major strategic zone in the eastern sector of the front, and mobilized hundreds of thousands of troops and lots of planes, warships, tanks, artillery pieces, etc.

After seeing through the sinister intention of the enemy with far-sighted wisdom, the President gave an instruction to build a strong defensive position on Height 1211 where a large-scale attack of the enemy was expected.

KPA soldiers, who constructed a defensive position on Height 1211 according to the operational plan of the President, dealt a heavy political and military blow to the aggressors.

The US imperialists, who had been defeated in the battle, called the height "heartbreak ridge" because they felt very hurt when merely seeing Height 1211, and they also called it "trap valley" as they could not survive in the valley at the foot of the height.

The 2nd Infantry Division of the KPA was awarded the title of Guards and many service personnel of the KPA state commendations including the title of Hero of the DPRK for their undying feats in winning the battle for defending the height. -0-
