Koryo Songgyungwan University in Kaesong Municipality of DPRK

Pyongyang, December 25 (KCNA) -- Koryo Songgyungwan University, the highest educational institution in the period of Koryo (918-1392), is located at the foot of Mt Songak in Kaesong Municipality, the DPRK.

Songgyungwan, which was built in 992, was called Kukjagam at that time. Later, it was called Songgyungwan and lasted until the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910).

Its building, which was burnt by the Japanese aggressors during the Imjin War (1592-1598), was restored to its original shape.

Songgyungwan occupies a large area and consists of dormitories in the east and the west, the Myongryun Hall, shrines in the east and the west, the Taesong Hall, etc.

The buildings are divided into the northern district with the Taesong Hall as its center and the southern district with the Myongryun Hall (19.3m long and 9.3m wide) as its center.

Songgyungwan is one of the largest buildings among the old buildings in the country. It shows a glimpse of the educational system and architecture of Koryo as it preserves the appearance of the state educational institution at that time.

According to historical documents, it produced many famous patriotic commanders and scholars.

Today Koryo Songgyungwan University, which succeeded Songgyungwan, has developed into a seat of training technical personnel to contribute to the development of the country's light industry. -0-
