Songchon Chestnut Products Popular in DPRK

Pyongyang, May 9 (KCNA) -- Pyongyang, Songchon and Kumya chestnuts have been well known in the DPRK.

Songchon chestnuts in South Phyongan Province are famous in the whole country and even in other countries.

The chestnut is also called Songchon Yakbam. Its fruit is small in size and peculiar in taste and aroma. It contains lots of nutritive substances good to people such as protein, lipid and saccharinity.

From olden times, the Korean people have used Songchon chestnuts to make various kinds of dishes such as sweet rice dish.

The Songchon County Foodstuff Factory, which was successfully built as the first entity of the regional rejuvenation last year, turns out a lot of chestnut products with high nutritive indexes including chestnut jam and chestnut sweet food.

These products are so famous that an old man living in the township of Songchon County said with pleasure that his married daughter in Pyongyang asked him to send chestnut sweet jelly and chestnut sweet cake to her.

An official of the factory said that everyone from other places buy chestnut products of the county.

The county stored 20 tons of chestnuts last year, he said, adding that he thought these were enough for this year, but more than 6 tons of chestnuts had already been used within two months. He expressed the will to increase the storage capacity to diversify the local specialties.

Products of Songchon were highly appreciated at the show of products of newly-built regional-industry factories in 20 cities and counties held in Pyongyang shortly ago, as they made progress in improving the quality. -0-
