Loach Soup - Intangible Cultural Heritage of DPRK

Pyongyang, June 3 (KCNA) -- Loach soup is a specialty of the Kaesong area in the DPRK. It is a spicy food boiled hard with other ingredients.

According to historical data, the people of the Koryo (ancient Korean state) enjoyed loach soup.

The records dating back to the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910) tell that there was a special loach soup processed with blocks of bean curd with loaches in them as well as ordinary loach soup.

The preparation of loach soups is different according to regions.

In particular, inhabitants in the Kaesong area usually season the flesh of loaches and then thoroughly boil it with Kaesong peppered bean paste.

In every region, the people flavour loach soups with ginger juice or betony.

Loach is good for the health of people. It is easy to digest and effective in invigorating and restoring liver function.

Therefore, the Korean people have made soup with fleshy and nutritious loaches in autumn every year to regain strength.

Loach soup was registered as part of the national intangible cultural heritage in October 2017. -0-
