Scientific Meteorological Observation and Forecast in DPRK

Pyongyang, March 23 (KCNA) -- March 23 is World Meteorological Day.

On the occasion of the day, the World Meteorological Organization set the theme "Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow", stressing the need for each country to make meteorological observations and forecasts well to prevent the danger of disaster beforehand.

In the DPRK, weather forecast has been put on a scientific basis and observation equipment on a modern basis under the care of the state. The country is striving to provide accurate and prompt forecasts of weather situation while strengthening international cooperation in this field.

Recently, researchers of the State Hydro-Meteorological Administration established methods for raising the accuracy of disastrous weather forecast and confirmed the accuracy assessment indices and methods for various kinds of models and forecasting items by dint of AI, thus putting the weather forecast on a higher scientific basis.

They developed a county-level early warning system for downpour and flooding and introduced it into the southern areas in the central part of the country in 2024 and into the whole country by early April in 2025, thus making it prove effective in ensuring the scientific accuracy and promptness of weather forecast.

They put the marine forecast on a scientific basis, observation on a modern basis, data communication on an IT basis and forecast process on a real-time basis, thus making a series of successes in the work to improve service level for the marine and maritime weather data.

The DPRK joined the World Meteorological Organization in May 1975. -0-
