Korean Dressing Custom - Intangible Cultural Heritage of DPRK

Pyongyang, May 21 (KCNA) -- The Korean dressing custom was registered as a national intangible cultural heritage in November 2013.

The custom consists of making method and attire of the traditional Korean clothes, which were formed through long historical period in consideration of the country's natural and climatic conditions and its people's way of life, emotions, hobbies, etc.

The Korean people have developed their dressing custom since ancient times. It includes the traditional skills and ways of making men's, women's and children's clothes and footwear.

They used such natural fiber as hemp, ramie, silk and cotton cloth in making clothes.

The Korean dressing custom has promoted the sustained development and preserved its unique colors, being harmonized naturally with other elements of cultural heritages including traditional handicraft and traditional art through its development.

The 19th meeting of the intergovernmental committee for the protection of intangible cultural heritages of the UNESCO, held in December 2024, adopted a decision on registering the Korean dressing custom as a typical intangible cultural heritage of mankind. -0-
