Pyongyang, May 22 (KCNA) -- Large-capacity greenhouses for growing rice seedlings were built in Kangnam County, Pyongyang. The county produces nutritive cold-bed rice seedlings, which can be transplanted in thousands of hectares of paddy fields, at greenhouses covering an area of 23 000 square meters.
It built a glass greenhouse covering an area of more than 4 600 square meters, 13 blocks of arch-style plastic sheet greenhouse covering an area of 1 400-square meters, a yard for fertile soil for seedbeds, production and apartment buildings, and formed several hectares of experimental fields around the greenhouses.
The labor- and plot-saving greenhouses, where the cultivation of rice seedlings have been put on a scientific, modern and IT basis, make it possible to reduce the area of seedbeds by one fifty-fourths and manpower by one seventeenths and require no materials for making seedbeds.
Agricultural officials and workers say as follows: The method of cultivating rice seedlings at the greenhouse is good. It is not affected by unfavorable weather conditions and there is no necessary for making rice seedbeds, a difficult process in rice farming, and for removing the young rice plants from the seedbeds. This method is very profitable as it is possible to shorten the period of striking root and increase the yield, as well as to cultivate greenhouse vegetables after rice-transplantation.
Based on the Workers' Party of Korea's strategic developing outlook on turning the agriculture of the country into the advanced agriculture with science and technology as the main motive force for agricultural development, and achieving stable and sustainable growth of agricultural production, nutritive cold-bed rice seedlings were bred to be introduced into nearly 60 percent of the paddy fields across the country this year. -0-
