Anniversary of Promulgation of Law on Sex Equality Marked

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Today marks the 78th anniversary of the promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality by President Kim Il Sung after national liberation. (August 15, 1945).

The President set it as an important task of the democratic revolution to emancipate women socially and wisely led the work to realize sex equality.

In those days he worked heart and soul to bring about revolutionary changes in the position and rights of the women and made sure that the women’s union was formed and many women were involved in it to be educated and trained.

Though he was busy with the building of a new country, he met women officials frequently and stressed that the right to sex equality should be won through their own efforts and struggle, leading them to arm themselves with a democratic ideology and take an active part in the work for building a new Korea.

When the agrarian reform was enforced, he made sure that women were granted land in the same qualifications as men. When the Labour Law was enforced, he ensured that women came to enjoy the rights equal to the men's in their working life.

On the basis of laying a foundation for the solution of the women issue, the President promulgated "Law on Sex Equality in North Korea" on July 30, Juche 35 (1946).

The law, rare to be found in any other country, was a code of respecting and prioritizing women.

The promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality helped the Korean women free themselves from the long-standing feudal oppression and humiliation and participate in the political, economic and cultural life of the country with the same rights as men. -0-
