Measure Taken by President Kim Il Sung for Raising Water Temperature of Rice Field

One day in April 1976, President Kim Il Sung visited the then Onpho Cooperative Farm in Kyongsong County, North Hamgyong Province of the DPRK.

The President acquainted himself with the farming preparations from officials of the farm and saw the cold-bed rice-seedlings growing. Then he gazed at a ditch flowing through one side of a paddy field for a long time.

He told an official to measure the water temperature.

After looking at the scale of the thermometer after a while, he said that the water temperature falls 3-4 degrees Celsius than atmospheric temperature and it is very important to warm water in rice fields in cold area or sterile land. He noted that if the water temperature goes up 4 degrees Celsius, it will be better for rice farming.

After looking at the surrounding area for a while, the President told the officials that it is the better that the Onpho Cooperative Farm would draw waste hot spring water flowing from the holiday camp into the paddy fields, and took a measure for it.

Officials were excited by the extraordinary wisdom and warm affection of the President who solved at once their impatience which they could not solve though they made painstaking efforts to raise the water temperature of rice fields. -0-
