Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- The UN General Assembly in 1972 raised environmental protection as an important issue to be addressed by the whole world and decided to commemorate the World Environment Day on June 5 every year.
In the past, the work for environmental protection was conducted as a nationwide and all-people movement in the DPRK.
According to the environmental protection policy of the DPRK government, the Law on the Protection of Environment was adopted in April 1986 and innovative measures were taken to conserve forests, prevent pollution of rivers and reduce greenhouse gas emission.
Afterwards, the Law on the Protection of Environment was amended and supplemented several times to contribute to making the appearance of the land more beautiful, protecting and promoting the people's health and providing them with cultural and hygienic living environment and working conditions.
Officials, working people, youth and students have turned out in the drive for making all mountains of the country into gold and treasure ones in every spring and autumn period of the general mobilization for land administration.
Mass media including Korean Central TV conduct intensive propaganda on environmental protection such as disseminating common sense and explaining it so that all the people take an active part in this work.
The work is being conducted in different parts of the country to improve environment such as river improvement, road reconstruction, landscaping streets and villages, repairing houses and sprucing up parks and recreation grounds.
Many foreign visitors say that cities and air are clean in the DPRK. -0-
