DPRK Men and Women Weightlifters Take First Place in Retaining World Records

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- The DPRK weightlifters took the first place in the country standings of retaining world records as they held ten world records in women's body-weight events and two world records in men's body-weight events in a little more than three months.

Since the International Weightlifting Federation decided to hold a new body-weight events from June 2025, DPRK weightlifters have set new world records one after another in every international game since the world championships in Norway in October.

Song Kuk Hyang and Ri Suk lifted 120 kg and 111 kg in the snatch, 150 kg and 142 kg in the clean and jerk and 270 kg and 253 kg in total in the women's 69 kg and 63 kg categories respectively, and retained all three world records of these weight categories.

Ri Song Gum and O Kwang Ok lifted 122 kg and 133 kg in the clean and jerk and 213 kg and 238 kg in total respectively in the women's 48 kg and 58 kg categories, breaking two world records respectively.

These ten world records set by DPRK women weightlifters exceed 80 percent of the total number of world records broken at present among the standard records (24) that the International Weightlifting Federation has newly set.

Meanwhile, the DPRK team took the first place in the standings of world record-holding in men's weightlifting, too, as Ro Kwang Ryol and Ri Chong Song broke world records in the clean and jerk of the 88kg category and in total of the 79kg category respectively. -0-
